Attachment

  • Attachments and relationships

Attachment styles are ways of bonding that people learn as children and use in their adult relationships. They are usually thought to come from the type of care a person experienced when they were young.

This idea is based on trusting that the attachment figure will be there for them as a safe base from which they can experience the world when they are not in distress. It's this safe place from which they can get support, security, and comfort when they are in distress.

Attachment styles that we learn as kids from interacting with our main caregivers often stay with us into adults and affect what we expect, how we feel, and how we act in love relationships. In particular, confident, nervous, and avoidant attachment styles tend to stay the same from childhood to adults when it comes to love relationships.
